So How Much Money Can I Earn In My Home Business Teaching Music?

So how much money can you earn in your home business teaching music? The key word in that title is “earn”. You and I both know that money doesn’t grow on guitars or on the bottom of a Yamaha slab. We have to earn it before we get to keep it, home business or not. But given that, here are some estimates based on my own experience and others in the music teaching business field that I know or know about.

It depends on what part of the country you live in, and whether or not you live in the city or in the country, as rates are dramatically different from place to place. But as an average a beginning music teacher could expect to earn about $25. per lesson, and if you teach half-hour lessons, that is $50. per hour. Experienced teachers can and do often earn twice that -- $50. per lesson -- $100. per hour. And a few top teachers earn a great deal more than that, as you might suppose. Let me give you a scenario that might spark an idea in your mind: Instead of charging by the lesson, charge by the month. That way you stabilize your income by eliminating cancellations and make up lessons. For example, back in the 70’s I charged by the month, and students would come for an hour lesson instead of a half-hour lesson, which greatly appealed to parents. I broke the hour up into 3 segments: the student would spend 20 minutes with me, 20 minutes watching a film strip about music theory, and 20 minutes with one of my older students working on what I had assigned them. They loved it, and it worked out well for everyone – the student, the parents, and me. That way I had 3 students onboard each hour, rotating between the 3 “stations” mentioned above, so I was taking in 3 times the income a normal teacher would take in during the same time period! Of course I paid my “assistant teachers” (older students) something, plus I had to buy the film strips and projector to get going, but once in motion, it was an excellent home business income for a minimum of time spent teaching music. I carried about 100 students during those years, but only taught between the hours of 3PM to 8PM 5 days a week – that’s just 25 hours per week – but made a full time income from it, plus had my days free to develop the second part of my teaching endeavors – the mail order division, which in time far eclipsed the private teaching element (read about that in the “Mail Order” section of this site).

So if YOU set up the same program as I had back in the 70’s, instead of charging $35. per month, you could easily charge 3 times that – after all, this is 2004 – not 1974 – and you may have noticed that things cost just a bit more now! (I bought a brand new Toyota Corolla back then for $1995.! Think what they cost now, then extrapolate that to your teaching income…. So let’s say that you charge $100. per month and you have 3 students per hour (like I did), and teach from 3 to 8 PM five days a week (like I did). That’s 25 teaching hours times 3 students = 75 students times $100. per student = $7500. per month, which figures out to be about $75. per hour. Better than a part-time job at Burger Bash, I would say. And you still have all morning and the early part of the afternoon to build other parts of your business.
